Grayling
and brown trout
General: Grayling can be found from the forest region to the
mountains, while brown trout is most common in the mountain
area. Big grayling can be found in many rivers and lakes in
Swedish Lapland. A growing fashion is to flyfish for grayling
in lakes, by the use of float tubes. The first packages on this
site for grayling, brown trout and arctic char are Kultsjön
and Ammarnäs. But you can also find good places for grayling
in Gafsele and Rännudden, in fact Rännudden is only
10 minutes away from the rivers where the World Flyfishing Championship
was held in 2001. Rännudden is also host for the Lapland
World Cup Fishing 2002.
Season
The season starts in mid June with the first big hatch of mayflies.
In the mountains the season starts 1-2 weeks later, the season
lasts from mid June to the beginning of September. In the mountain
area you can find nice fishing for arctic char.
Rod
and baits
A rod AFTM 5-7 is perfect for this kind of fishing, and recommended
is a travelrod, which makes it easier to walk in the forest.
A floating line is mostly used but a sink tip is an alternative
if the water is high and You like to try heavy nymphs. For spin
fishermen a light rod would be a good choice. Prepare for a
rocky bottom, by replacing the three hook with a single hook.
This also makes it easy to release undersized fish.
