Fever for winter flyfishing
The winter has arrived to Swedish Lapland and most of the rivers and lakes are covered with ice. This is the start for the ice fishing period, we fish for the same species as during summer, but with other equipment. We drill a hole through the ice and use small (20-40 cm long) sensitive rods with small baits (mormyska) or spoons tackled with small worms.

During December-February the fishing for burbot (Lota Lota) is very popular. This fishing is mainly done during evenings and nights. Often familys get together on the ice, having a small fire and drinking hot chocolate during fishing. The fishing for burbot is often done with a heavy spoon that bumps into the bottom and attracts the fish. The hook is baited with small pieces of fish (perch or herring). Normal size of the fish is between 1-3 kg (lb 2-6). During this period the burbot get together for spawning among rivermouths, rivers and small bays, those places are the hot areas.

Icefishing combined with flyfishing
The fishing for arctic char has begun in the mountain area. This is a very special kind of ice fishing laying down on a reindeer skin, looking through the clear water and actually seeing the char attacking the bait. The only problem is to control the nerves when You see the char circulate around the bait.

In just a couple of months it´s time for a very exotic way of flyfishing, that has been developed during the last years in the mountains. You simply walk out on the ice, close to the open water by the current (a guide is necessary during this kind of fishing) and flyfish for artic char using heavy nymphs. If You´ve never tried this, I can promise You an extra ordinary experience catching a 2 kg (lb 4) arctic char on Your fly rod, standing in a fantastic snow white environment, and then walk back home for some after fishing and a sauna.
To try both icefishing and flyfishing at the same time during winter is something unique, world wide but also in Sweden. The most popular place for this kind of fishing is the camp Kultsjögården in the village Saxnäs. More information on the camp can be found at: Kultsjön
