A lot of pike over 10 kg (20 lb) has been caught in the Baltic sea

The pike fishing season by the coastline of Swedish Lapland has started out tremendously!!. During January-March several pike over 10 kg was caught. Even if the ice still covers the Baltic Sea, the anglers who have used ice-fishing equipment have been successful.

One of the anglers was especially successful. In the middle of January (within three days) he landed 4 pike over 100 cm in length. In February several big ones were caught, the largest weighing 12.56 kg and measuring 117 cm long. In the end of March a gigantic pike went for the bait beneath the ice, it weighed 15 kg and was 119 cm long.

The catches are remarkable due to the fact that the season basically starts during late May. So the upcoming season looks promising.

The Baltic pike can be found along the entire coastline of northern Sweden. The Baltic Sea is brackish with a very low grade of salinity, in some places by the coast there are even populations of grayling. Popular baits for the pike are Rappalas and jerk baits that have been introduced by foreign pike fishermen. Fly-fishing for pike, in the shallow bays, is also getting more and more popular..
