Salmon
and seatrout
General: The most famous rivers for salmon and seatrout in the
county Västerbotten are the Byske älv, Lögde
älv, Rickleå and with the mighty mountain river Vindelälven
as a fast upcommer. In fact, driving a car by the coast in the
county of Västerbotten, you will pass a river with salmon
and seatrout every 30 km. The first package with salmon and
seatrout, presented on this site is the Byske Camping, situated
by the coast and close to the river Byske älv, one of the
most famous salmon rivers in Sweden. More packages with salmon
and seatrout will be presented in 2002.
Biology
The salmon that hatch in the rivers of Swedish Lapland stays
for 3-4 years until they start the dangerous and long journey
(more than 1 000 km) down to the southern part of the Baltic
sea. They grow big on herring for a period of 1-5 years until
they return to their native rivers. In opposite to the salmon
the seatrout grows big in the northern part of the Baltic Sea.

Season
In forest rivers like the Byskeälven the fishing for seatrout
starts in the second half of May. The peak season for salmon
is normally June but July and August are also good months. The
fishing for seatrout is allowed in most rivers from mid May
to mid September. During the period May to June 18 all salmons
caught must be released.
June 19 is normally the start of the period when it's allowed
to keep one salmon per day. From September 15 it's a 4 week
stop for both salmon and seatrout fishing in the rivers.
Rods/Bait
The most commonly used flyfishing rod is a two hand rod, 11-13
feet, but many locals also use one hand rods. The Byske river
can be quite rocky so a wading stick is necessary if you are
not used to wild rivers. Commonly used flies are Thunder &
Lightning and GP Special. In the beginning of the season a sink
tip/sinking line can be a good choice due to springflood, and
in the late season a floating line will do fine. Spin fishermen
are recommended to use rappalas and spoons like the Tasmanian
devil.
