SALMON FISHING ON OUR HOME RIVER: TORNION-MUONION RIVER
To be precise Tornion-Muonionjoki (border river of Finland-Sweden), is one of the largest free-flowing rivers in Europe been largest free Salmon river in Europe. It´s basicly formed by two rivers, river Torne stretching approximately 510 kilometers from its source in the mountains of Sweden to the Gulf of Bothnia (Baltic Sea), and river Muonion starting from Finnish maiden´s shoulder close to Norway border. The river forms a natural border between Sweden and Finland, making it a unique and significant waterway in the region. It is renowned for its pristine waters and stunning natural landscapes, offering a serene environment for fishing enthusiasts.
The Tornion-Muonion River is particularly famous for its salmon, attracting anglers from all over the world. The river is home to one of the largest populations of wild Baltic Salmon in Europe. These fish are known for their size and strength, providing an exhilarating challenge for fishermen. Salmon in the water system can grow to impressive sizes, with some yearly caught individuals weighing over 25 kilograms.
The season on this water system starts 1.6. (Sweden), 8.6. (Finland) and ends 25.8. (FInland) & 31.6. (Sweden).
The prime season for salmon fishing on our Base Camp Pello area is around mid-summer, end of June. During this period, the river teems with migrating salmon, making it an ideal time for anglers to cast their lines. The season’s start is eagerly anticipated by the local fishing communities and tourists alike, marking the beginning of a vibrant and bustling fishing period. Following the salmon season, the whitefish season takes over, offering another excellent fishing opportunity.
Conservation Success. The river’s Salmon population has seen significant recovery efforts, making it a conservation success story. Strict regulations and sustainable fishing practices have helped maintain healthy fish populations.
At the moment Seatrout is prohibited being under huge recovery efforts like Tengeliö river/water system opening (bypassing two dams, recovery acts on multiple rivers) 900 km´s spawning habitat.
Cultural Heritage. Fishing on this border river water system is not just a recreational activity but a deeply rooted tradition. Local communities have been fishing these waters for centuries, passing down techniques and stories from generation to generation.
