SUOMI FISHING: TRADITIONAL FISHING

 LAPLAND FISHING

SUOMI FISHING

"Suomi Fishing or Traditional Salmon Fishing is very intense and still meditating way of fishing - and also very effective!  We focus on certain spots of the river, usually these spots are where the fish is resting or is getting ready for coming spawning season. Strikes are usually very aggressive with fish taking plenty line out - with salmons +100 metres isn´t rare.

Join us, Janne Karjalainen"

Suomi Fishing
is a traditional Finnish method of fishing, deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Finland. This method is synonymous with the authentic fishing experiences found in the pristine rivers of Finnish Lapland, particularly the renowned Tornio River. Suomi Fishing targets all big predators, including salmon, trout, and pike.

The Sami people, indigenous to the Fennoscandian region, have a long history of boat-making. Their traditional sewn boats, constructed using a method where planks were sewn together with roots or sinew, represent an ancient craftsmanship that has been preserved and passed down through generations. This unique construction method made the boats highly flexible and durable, ideal for the challenging conditions of northern waters. These techniques not only reflect a rich cultural heritage but also demonstrate an early understanding of engineering and material science that continues to influence modern boat design

Handcrafted Wooden Riverboat

This traditional wooden riverboat is handcrafted using age-old techniques, offering a nostalgic and authentic fishing experience in the serene waters of Lapland. Historically, these boats were constructed using unique lashing techniques where planks were fastened together with root fibers or sinew. This method not only provided durability but also showcased the ingenuity of the Sami people in boat-making .

This modern riverboat, equipped with a motor and built from advanced materials, provides a comfortable and efficient fishing experience while navigating the currents of Lapland’s rivers. The evolution from traditional materials to modern composites highlights the blend of heritage and contemporary technology in Finnish fishing practices. Today’s boats still draw on the design principles of traditional craftsmanship, ensuring stability and ease of maneuverability .
  •    The riverboat used in Suomi Fishing is typically made from sturdy materials, designed to withstand the rugged conditions of              the river.
  •    The boat is equipped with trolling sets, lures, and flies specifically chosen to attract big predators such as Atlantic salmon,                  trout, and pike.

TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUE

Suomi Fishing involves fishing from a traditional Finnish riverboat, a technique that has been passed down through generations. The boat, often handcrafted and designed for optimal maneuverability in the river’s currents, can accommodate up to three adults, including the guide who is also the oarsman.

The Fishing process

  • Rowing and Drifting: The guide rows the boat, allowing it to drift downstream. This gentle movement mimics the natural flow                                           of the river, making the lures and baits appear more enticing to the fish.
  •  Finding the Fish: The guide, with years of experience and a deep understanding of the river, identifies the best spots where                                      salmon, trout, and pike are likely to be found. These areas are usually where the fish rest during their                                              upstream migration or where they are hunting.
  • The Catch: Once the guide locates a promising spot, the customer takes over, handling the rods and attempting to hook a                             fish. The excitement peaks as the fish bites, and the angler engages in a thrilling battle to reel it in.
